For todays stitch we will be learning the single crochet. The single crochet was the first stitch I was taught and it is used in a lot of patterns, especially Amigurumi. It is fairly easy to learn and once you get the hang of it, it works up quick.

What you will need today :

  • Weight 4 Acrylic yarn (I used Hobby Lobby’s brand ‘I Love This Yarn’)
  • 6mm crochet hook (This is the set I use! https://amzn.to/48T7VWO)
  • Scissors
  • Tape measure
  • Tapestry needle

For those of you who already know how to single crochet, here is the pattern for you guys to follow!

  • CH 22
  • Row 1 – SC in second CH from hook and down the remaining. (21)
  • For rows 2-25 you will repeat row 1.

Once you have completed your square it should measure 6 1/4 x 6 1/4. Weaved in your ends and your square is finished!

Now for my beginners!

Let’s tie our yarn to our hook! I prefer double knotting my yarn as I feel it’s more secure but if you would like to use a slip knot, that works just as well!

Now lets chain!

To chain you will wrap your hook in front of your yarn and then wrap your yarn around your hook and pull through.

You have completed your first chain!!!

Now you will continue repeating that until you have a total of 22 chains. (the loop on your hook does not count as a chain)

Now that you have your 22 chains, you will look for the second chain from your hook.

Place your hook into the second chain, then you will wrap your hook and pull through the first loop.

You should have two loops on your hook now. Wrap once more and pull through both loops, leaving only 1 loop.

Now in the remaining 20 chains you will continue placing single crochets.

Awesome job! The first row is the hardest on any project, now it’ll be a lot easier!

To begin the next row you will chain 1 and turn your work. You should see these little boxes! (in image 3)

Now into your first single crochet (your chain 1 does not count) you will enter your hook in the middle of the boxes picking up 2 loops, wrap your hook and pull through the first 2 loops. You should have 2 loops remaining, wrap your hook and pull through the last two loops.

Continue your single crochets until you reach the end of your row, you should have 21 single crochets at the end of each row. Keep repeating row 2 until you have a total of 25 rows!

Once you have finished your square, measure it, It should be 6 1/4 x 6 1/4! Weave in your ends and you will have a finished square!

I hope you enjoyed today’s project! I’ll see you guys with a new post Tuesday! Have a great day!

(Editor note – doing two new stitches a week was a lot for me so I will only be doing one a week until I can get some more time. It will still be labeled the same as I hope to start posting two stitches a week but until then I will be posting on Tuesdays!)
