How to Crochet a Double Crochet

Hello friends! Welcome back to my blog! I’m sorry I’m over a week late to post this, it has truly been a hectic week. In today’s tutorial, I will teach you how to do a double crochet. I love using double crochets for blankets as it’s a quick working stitch! Without further delay, let’s get started!

Let’s get started! ~

What you’ll need :

  • Weight 4 acrylic yarn (I use ‘I love this yarn’ from hobby lobby)
  • 6mm crochet hook (this is the set I use https://amzn.to/3uNYwBm )
  • Scissors
  • Tapestry needle
  • Tape measure

For those of you who already know how to do this stitch but want to make this square –

  • Tie your yarn to your hook and ch 20
  • in the 3rd ch from your hook place a dc and place a dc in each of the remaining stitches. Ch 2 and turn (18)
  • Dc in each st for 11 more rows. You should have 12 rows total

Your square should measure 6 1/4 x 6 1/4 inches. If your measurements match chain 1 and tie off.

Congrats! You’ve finished your square!

Now for my beginners! Grab your yarn and hook and lets get started

(if you prefer a video here’s a link to my YouTube video : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rVVRtarH5mM

To begin we are going to attach our yarn to our hook, I do that by tying on with a double knot, you can do it with a slip knot as well.

Alright now lets chain (ch)

To chain (ch), cross your hook in front of your yarn and wrap it over your hook, then slide your hook through the loop closest to the hook base. Yay! Your first chain (ch) is done, now you will chain (ch) 19 more times (20)

Now that you have your chain (ch) completed, wrap your hook and find the 3rd chain (ch) from your hook, insert your hook. You should have 3 loops on your hook.

Wrap your hook and pull through the first loop, you will still have 3 loops on your hook, wrap your hook again.

Pull through the next two loops, you should have two loops left, wrap your hook once more and pull through the last two loops. You have completed your first double crochet! Awesome job. You will now insert your hook into the next chain, along with all remaining. (18)

Now to start your next row~

To start your next row, chain (ch 2) 2, turn your work, wrap your hook, and insert it into the first box. Your two chains (ch) don’t count as stitches, they just set the height for the next row, your first stitch is the box below the chains (ch).

Wrap your hook again and pull through, you should have 3 loops on your hook. Wrap your hook again and pull through the next two loops. You should have two loops left on your hook.

Wrap your hook and pull through the last two loops, you should have a complete double crochet. You will continue doing that down the chain (ch) until you have no more empty stitches (18)

You will continue row 2 until you have a total of 12 rows. Your square should measure 6 1/4 x 6 1/4 inches.

Now its time to tie off. Just chain one and pull the loop around your hook out!

I hope you guys enjoyed today’s tutorial and I hope to see you next week for a new stitch!
